The HotList 9/20

I went down to an open gym at Roanoke Catholic in Roanoke, VA. I have to give props to Shannon Taylor of the Roanoke Lady Hawks and Tom Brown head coach of Roanoke Catholic for putting it together.
And of course Coach Jeremy Hartman from Lee High, 3D Sports Performance and Gannon Baker Basketball, who gave the players a nice training session.

One of the biggest challenges I deal with as a scout is getting to see kids who are not located within the DMV hotbed areas and I want to make sure that I get to see players from all over ,but sometimes the logistics are tricky. Many of these players don’t play for big schools or elite club squads but it doesn’t mean that they don’t have the talent, desire and ability to play college basketball. So if there is a gym with girls putting in work LBoogie will be there!

2011

Kenzie Poindexter 5-7 Salem/Salem, VA…I am not sure why this kid isn’t getting more interest from smaller DI schools because she can play…not flashy or showy but extremely smart and efficient and she doesn’t turn over the ball(which is the primary job of any point guard isn’t it?). She doesn’t try to do more than she is capable and she knows how to get her own shot and distribute the ball.

Lashe Walker 6-2 Patrick Henry/Roanoke, VA She has a college post body and decent post offensive skills. She defends well and has a knack for blocking shots. She is getting a little traffic from colleges but I think she can definitely play mid-major with some work

Daquaa Scott 5-11 Lee/Stauton, VA Tweener post that is super aggressive and strong. Decent footwork on offense around the basket. She definitely has an enforcer like mentality on the boards. She can play in the MEAC…Coach Davis and Coach Six you need to get on this girl!

Miranda Smith 5-11 Salem/Salem, VA I saw this girl in the summer and I was very impressed, she has a tremendous upside. She is extremely athletic and can get to the basket in traffic….nice form on her jumper. Her open floor ball handling needs improvement but with her overall skill set she can play in a lower-major DI program.

2012

Angela Mickens 5-7 Lee/Stauton, VA Extremely talent guard that has a natural feel for the game. She was the best player in the building and when she was focused it was hard to stop her. She has excellent court vision and and isn’t afraid to make a tough pass. She has been working hard on her off-the-dribble shot. Unfortunately, she is not being challenged in her current setting which has more to do with geography than desire. Right now she can play with the ball, make one handed passes etc. things she won’t get away with if she was facing some of the better guards in the Northern section of the DMV. But there is no doubt that she can step up to that challenge.

Kandice ‘Daisy’ Ball 6-3 Pulaski Cty She has a body built for the college game. She is still raw but she has shown marked improvement since the last time I saw her in the summer. She matched up well against Walker and she didn’t back down. She showed some nice counter moves in the post and she rebounds well. Daisy reminds me a little of UVA’s Simone Egwu.

2013
Ataijah ‘Tay’ Taylor 5-8 Salem/Salem,VA She continues to grow and develop right before my eyes..and she know she needs to keep working on that stop and pop jumper. Tay is already recognized as one of the top players in her class in the region and is making a name for herself on the national level.

Sunday I hit Hoop Magic for the West Springfield Fall League…Coach Gibson does a great job will this league.
When I go to fall league I am not really watching games, I am taking inventory on players…checking to see who has transferred, progress on injury recover, newbies etc. I did stop to watch a game between West Springfield and Osborne Park and even though they are not in mid-season form I predict that these 2 teams are going to have very good seasons. WS has Sophs April Robinson and Logan Battle and OP has Jr Destiny Shearin and Soph KK Atchison, all top players in the region. And I must applaud the parents from both teams who just sat on the sidelines and WATCHED the game without a bunch of drama and histrionics..yes it is only fall league!!!

NOT SO HOT…this week I have had a flurry of calls and emails from parents who are trying to promote their daughters..in theory there is nothing wrong with that. However, the level of player and level expectation don’t match. I am not sure if there is a sale on Daddy Googles at Our Eyes but this trend is rather disturbing because these poor kids aren’t even college prospects in some cases. So if you tell me that your player is the greatest thing since Candace Parker, I am going to evaluate her with that in the back of my mind. Parents must realize they can do nothing to manipulate the college recruiting process, your daughter will be hurt and disappointed and that is never a good thing.
